Hansen Global Forest Change v1.12 (UMD / Google / USGS / NASA)

30m global tree cover loss year-by-year since 2001 — harvest, fire, and disease included, not deforestation alone.

What this is

Hansen GFC maps annual tree cover loss at 30m globally from 2001 through 2024 (v1.12). The loss layer records any canopy removal — harvest, fire, disease, and conversion are all included; it is not a deforestation-only layer. UFFDA samples the GeoTIFF tiles server-side via a field-polygon clip and returns the percentage of a field that has lost tree cover, plus a breakdown of which years the loss occurred. The binary map layer is live now; year-by-year loss coloring is coming. Data by Hansen/UMD/Google/USGS/NASA, served from public Google Cloud Storage.

Why we surface it

Tree cover loss on or near a field is context that soil and crop data can't see. Whether it's a windbreak removal, edge-of-field clearing, or a fire scar, it shows up here. The by-year breakdown lets you date it.

What you can do with it

Shown for commercial use. Personal, research, and nonprofit use is often more permissive — switch the verdict lens on the catalog.

Internal / individual use
Free to use for any purpose, including commercial and AI training. Nothing's triggered until you share it.
Redistribute the data
Fine to use and redistribute, including commercially. One string attached: credit the original source wherever it shows up.
Republish a derivative
Build on it and republish freely, commercial or not. You must credit the original source in what you ship.
Build into a private product
Fine to build into a closed or commercial product. Attribution is still owed wherever the data is actually exposed to users.

This decoder is a starting point, not legal advice. For commercial deployment, run the actual license terms past someone who reads them for a living.

Good to know

Loss includes harvest, fire, and disease — not deforestation alone. Informational; not a ground-truth survey. CC-BY-4.0 applies to the Hansen GFC data product.
