What this is
Hansen GFC maps annual tree cover loss at 30m globally from 2001 through 2024 (v1.12) — including conversion alongside harvest, fire, and disease. UFFDA samples the imagery server-side via a field-polygon clip and returns the percentage of a field that has lost tree cover, plus a breakdown of which years the loss occurred. The map layer shows a single overview color when zoomed out and switches to year-by-year coloring once you zoom in — pale yellow for earlier loss around 2001, deepening to dark red for recent loss in 2024.
Why we surface it
Tree cover loss on or near a field is context that soil and crop data can't see. Whether it's a windbreak removal, edge-of-field clearing, or a fire scar, it shows up here. The by-year breakdown lets you date it.
