USDA NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL)

Annual per-pixel crop classification (30m), 2008–present. Powers UFFDA's per-field crop history via runtime click join.

What this is

Per-pixel classified crop type for the contiguous US. UFFDA joins the Cropland Data Layer to field boundaries at click time, every year, through USDA's public CroplandCROS service. The map's year picker offers 2008–2025, where national coverage is complete; earlier years exist but only for some states, so we don't offer them. The sidebar surfaces an 8-year window (2018–2025) by default, cached per field and year so re-clicks are instant.

Why we surface it

It's how UFFDA shows what was planted on a field over time. The crop-history grid is one of the highest-signal pieces of context per field — a corn-soy rotation is recognizable in seconds. Joining at the moment you click, instead of pre-building a nationwide dataset, keeps the data current without a heavy pipeline behind it.
