USDA NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL)
Annual per-pixel crop classification (30m), 2008–present. Powers UFFDA's per-field crop history via runtime click join.
What this is
Per-pixel classified crop type for the contiguous US. UFFDA joins the Cropland Data Layer to field boundaries at click time, every year through the public CroplandCROS service (the self-hosted copy that used to serve 2025 is kept as a dormant fallback). The map's year picker offers 2008–2025 — where national coverage is complete; earlier years exist but only for some states, so we don't offer them. The sidebar surfaces an 8-year window (2018–2025) by default; cached per (field, year) in Supabase so re-clicks are instant.
Why we surface it
It's how UFFDA shows 'what was planted on this field over time.' The crop-history grid is one of the highest-signal pieces of context per field — a real working farmer or analyst recognizes a corn-soy rotation in seconds. Runtime click-join keeps us light: no monthly GitHub Actions burn, no nationwide encode pipeline to maintain.
