Copernicus DEM GLO-30 (ESA / Copernicus)

The best open global elevation model at 30m. Newer and cleaner than SRTM.

What this is

Copernicus DEM GLO-30 is a 30m digital elevation model derived from radar data, released in 2021. Near-global coverage. License: free worldwide with attribution under the Copernicus DEM terms. Note: earlier releases excluded Armenia and Azerbaijan tiles; as of 2024, these restrictions have been lifted and global coverage is complete. Use SRTM only as a fallback — Copernicus GLO-30 is now the cleaner open option for all regions. Available as COG via AWS (`s3://copernicus-dem-30m/`), OpenTopography, and GEE.

Why we surface it

Slope, aspect, and drainage routing matter for erosion, runoff, drainage planning, and yield prediction in non-flat terrain. Copernicus DEM GLO-30 is the cleanest global source — more current than SRTM, with consistent processing.
