ISRIC WoSIS soil profiles (ISRIC)

230,000 real soil-pit profiles — the ground truth that SoilGrids is trained on.

What this is

ISRIC's World Soil Information Service (WoSIS) standardizes soil-profile observations from physical samples worldwide. The standardized public subset is roughly 230,000 profiles, available as bulk download or through standard geospatial web services.

Why we surface it

SoilGrids is a prediction; WoSIS is what it's predicting from. Knowing where the observational layer is dense or thin tells you how much to trust the model in a given region.

What you can do with it

Shown for commercial use. Personal, research, and nonprofit use is often more permissive — switch the verdict lens on the catalog.

This decoder is a starting point, not legal advice. For commercial deployment, run the actual license terms past someone who reads them for a living.

Good to know

WoSIS licensing is not uniform: most records are CC-BY, but some contributors attached their own restrictions, marked per-record in the WoSIS metadata. Check the per-record license flag before commercial use or AI training — the bulk download isn't guaranteed CC-BY throughout.

Planned

Not in the map yet — this source is on the V1 backlog. Schema, sample, and citation slots fill in once the layer ships.
