What this is
ISRIC's World Soil Information Service (WoSIS) standardizes soil-profile observations from physical samples worldwide. The standardized public subset is ~230,000 profiles. Available as bulk download, WFS, and OGC API. License note: WoSIS is NOT uniformly CC-BY-4.0. ISRIC's data policy applies CC-BY to the majority of records, but some profiles were contributed by providers who attached their own restrictions — those records are marked in the WoSIS metadata. For commercial use or AI training, verify the per-record license flags before including in a dataset; the bulk download is not guaranteed CC-BY throughout.
Why we surface it
SoilGrids is a prediction; WoSIS is what it's predicting from. Knowing where the observational layer is dense or thin tells you how much to trust the model in a given region.
