USDA NASS QuickStats — county crop yields
County-level annual crop yields (corn, soybeans, winter wheat, cotton, grain sorghum) from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
What this is
USDA NASS QuickStats is the official US government database of agricultural statistics — planted acres, harvested acres, yield per acre, and production by crop, state, and county. UFFDA uses the county-level annual yield survey for the five major row crops (corn, soybeans, winter wheat, cotton, and grain sorghum). This is a Mode-B read: when you click a field on the map, UFFDA reports the county average yield for that crop and year — giving you a rough benchmark to compare against. It is a county aggregate, not a prediction for that specific field. The data is public domain (US federal government work). The QuickStats API is free and requires only a no-cost API key registration.
Why we surface it
County yields answer the question 'how did this crop do around here?' — context that pairs naturally with the CDL crop-history grid. A corn-soy rotation that shows above-average yields for five straight years reads very differently from one tracking below-average county performance.

Good to know
County averages, not field-specific. NASS suppresses county data when the sample is too small to protect individual farm privacy — suppressed values show as 'Not reported.' Data is survey-based (not satellite-derived); coverage and methodology at nass.usda.gov.
