CHIRPS v3 (UCSB Climate Hazards Center)

Satellite-plus-gauge rainfall back to 1981, globally, at ~5km. The workhorse for regions with no gauge network.

What this is

CHIRPS blends satellite thermal imagery with ground-station data into a quasi-global daily rainfall record from 1981 to present. Coverage runs 60°N–60°S at 0.05° (~5km). Available via UCSB CHC bulk download, Google Earth Engine, and COG. Version 3 is current; v2 retires end-2026.

Why we surface it

Where rain gauges are sparse — which is most of the world — CHIRPS is often the most credible historical rainfall series available. Public domain (v3 — CC0-registered).
