ERA5-Land hourly reanalysis (global)

Global hourly land-surface weather reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), back to 1950.

What this is

ERA5-Land models historical land-surface weather — temperature, precipitation, soil conditions, and more — at roughly 9km resolution, hourly, back to 1950. It's the non-US counterpart to Daymet: consistent coverage anywhere ground stations are sparse.

Why we surface it

FTW field boundaries and SoilGrids soil data already reach worldwide, even if unevenly — FTW's own Global edition breaks down as India (~20% of coverage), Africa (~40%), and the rest of the world, not an even spread. ERA5-Land would match that same uneven reach for historical climate: deep hourly reanalysis wherever those boundaries exist, not just the US.

What you can do with it

Shown for commercial use. Personal, research, and nonprofit use is often more permissive — switch the verdict lens on the catalog.

Internal / individual use
Free to use for any purpose, including commercial and AI training. Nothing's triggered until you share it.
Redistribute the data
Fine to use and redistribute, including commercially. One string attached: credit the original source wherever it shows up.
Republish a derivative
Build on it and republish freely, commercial or not. You must credit the original source in what you ship.
Build into a private product
Fine to build into a closed or commercial product. Attribution is still owed wherever the data is actually exposed to users.
