What this is
Polygons of center-pivot irrigation systems — the circular fields a pivot arm sweeps — released as part of GMIE, a global maximum irrigation extent dataset. UFFDA uses them to tell whether a field boundary sits under a pivot, which the shape of the boundary itself cannot answer: field boundaries are drawn as parcels, so a pivot field is usually a square with a circle inside it. Naming, plainly: GCPIS is UFFDA's internal shorthand for this pivot layer, not the name the authors published it under. The upstream dataset is GMIE.
Why we surface it
Pivot or not is the single most useful thing to know about how a field is watered, and it is not recoverable from the boundary shape. This is the open dataset that supplies it.
