LANID — Landsat-based Irrigation Dataset for the United States

How often each place was irrigated, year by year, 1997–2020. One of the two datasets behind UFFDA's irrigated-fields layer.

What this is

LANID maps irrigation across the contiguous US from Landsat imagery, one layer per year. UFFDA uses the per-year record to count how many of the 24 mapped years (1997–2020) each field was irrigated — the number the irrigated-fields layer colors by. Two licenses in one dataset: the 1997–2017 core is Xie & Lark's own release under CC-BY 4.0, so attribution goes to them and not to a federal agency; the 2018–2020 extension is published by the US Geological Survey and is in the public domain. The mapped window ends in 2020, so nothing here says anything about the last few seasons.

Why we surface it

A single year of irrigation tells you very little — a field can be watered once in a dry year and never again. Counting the years is what separates land that is genuinely under irrigation from land that saw a pipe once. LANID is the only open dataset that supports that count across the whole contiguous US.

Free to use for any purpose, including commercial and AI training. Nothing's triggered until you share it.
Redistribute the data
Fine to use and redistribute, including commercially. One string attached: credit the original source wherever it shows up.
Republish a derivative
Build on it and republish freely, commercial or not. You must credit the original source in what you ship.
Build into a private product
Fine to build into a closed or commercial product. Attribution is still owed wherever the data is actually exposed to users.
